MATLAB for primary and secondary schools (PASS multi-license)

Modern educational practices are trying to move from simple solutions of tasks on a blackboard and paper to the use of interactive tools that allow tasks to be quickly and efficiently modeled, simulated, visualized and solutions deployed on real devices.

MATLAB has long provided tools to support more than 5,000 educational institutions worldwide. These institutions have successfully implemented MATLAB into the educational process and are also using it with their students to solve interesting tasks.

MathWorks has decided to support education in primary and secondary schools with a special type of PASS (Primary and Secondary School Suite) school-wide multi-license. This type of license allows all teachers and students of the school to use the tools of the MATLAB system under very favorable conditions (). The PASS license allows software to be installed even on users' private computers.

MATLAB is suitable for supporting the teaching of basic subjects such as mathematics and physics or professional technical and economic subjects. It allows working with real devices, which leads students to solve problems using project-oriented learning.

Secondary and elementary school teachers can familiarize themselves with the possibilities of the MATLAB & Simulink environment, among other things, at one of our accredited trainings in the DVPP system of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Czech Republic.

Project-oriented education

Project-Based Learning is an active learning method in which students work on real-world problems and expand their knowledge by solving them. Using an active approach, students are better motivated and better prepared to solve practical tasks. They use low-cost hardware such as LEGO MINDSTORMS robots, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, webcams or sensors in mobile devices such as iPhone or Android.

MATLAB, as the only software environment, supports work with all the mentioned platforms and is also used for solving advanced engineering tasks at universities and in practice.

Areas of project-oriented education in primary and secondary schools in which MATLAB is beneficial include:

  • basics of programming
  • creation of simple robotic and mechatronic systems
  • basics of design of control algorithms
  • acquiring data from various types of sensors
  • image and signal processing

Studying materials

MathWorks strives to facilitate the deployment of MATLAB in elementary and secondary schools through a large number of information resources for students and teachers (learning materials, videos, courses, ...). You can find them on the MathWorks website under Academia.

The teacher section contains teaching materials for elementary and middle school courses. There are materials for teachers, materials for students, solved examples and other interesting assignments for students' independent work.

The student section contains tutorials and videos that walk them step-by-step through MATLAB, Simulink, and areas of use of the MATLAB system such as mathematics, signal processing, or control systems.

For users who have no experience with the MATLAB system, we recommend visiting the page MATLAB Academy, where they can try working with a simplified environment in the MATLAB Onramp online course. After completing the course, you will receive a certificate.

The interactive online course Learn to code is intended for high school students from the age of 12.

Work with low-cost hardware

The basis of project-oriented education is a close connection with real devices. For example, LEGO MINDSTORMS, Arduino and Raspberry Pi are currently popular among students. MathWorks has prepared a dedicated page for this low-cost hardware.

Student competitions

Students who can solve basic problems in the MATLAB and Simulink system have the opportunity to test their knowledge using student competitions supported by MathWorks. In these competitions, they solve unique engineering problems and think like future engineers. In addition to technical knowledge, they often learn other skills such as project management and collaboration.

Already today, students from the Czech Republic and Slovakia with active knowledge of the MATLAB and Simulink systems participate in student competitions such as Formula Student or Istrobot.
